There are many ways we can use this technique to achieve different results. Not only will it turn water into a smooth surface, but it can also help remove people from a scene or situation. There is no limit to where you can use a long exposure. Any genre of photography can incorporate a long exposure. Even time-lapses work well.

What Gear Do You Need

  • A tripod is necessary for long exposures.
  • Block your viewfinder to ensure correct light metering and no light leakage. (This is only an issue in DSLRs.)
  • Use ‘bulb‘ mode on your camera as it will allow you to capture the scene for as long as you want. Using the shutter speed on a manual setting will give you a maximum of 30 seconds. Here, you will need a shutter release cable.
  • Make sure you choose the right conditions. If there are no moving elements in the scene, you don’t need to use a long exposure. Remember – the long exposure effects and obscures the moving elements.

Use This Technique Leading Lines

The goal of using leading lines in an image is to help the viewer by drawing the focus gradually to the main subject. Sometimes photographers use leading lines like roads, poles or even buildings. These direct the eyes of the viewer to the main subject.

In other instances, the leading lines are more figurative, such as road signs or building signs. It could be a secondary subject that is used to draw the viewer towards the main subject in the frame.

The most common leading lines are roads. These can naturally draw the eye to the main subject in the middle ground. Here the middle ground and the background are the same i.e. the layers of the mountains.

Most landscape photographers will always photograph at narrow apertures of at least f/8 and beyond. A narrow aperture is an aperture value or an f/stop value is big (bigger than f/5.0). A wide aperture is an aperture value or f/stop value is small (smaller than f/5.0). And finally, an aperture value of f/5.6 is considered as a normal aperture value. Using a narrow aperture technique allows for all elements in the frame to be in focus and sharp. The distinct layers can be seen.

What Is Moira Pattern in Photos?

Have you ever looked at your photo and seen unusual lines or colours? This is a moiré pattern, and it can be an annoying part of any photographer’s job. There are many ways to spot, avoid, and remove moiré. You won’t need to worry about moiré patterns at all if you use the right techniques.

In the past, the best way to remove moire was to shoot with the right equipment. Many old (and modern!) cameras have an anti-aliasing filter (also known as AA filter) that removes moire effect in-camera. The point of the filter is to help avoid moire pattern even when you’re photographing tiny details. The disadvantage of anti-aliasing filters is that they create more blur. This blur is a problem if you want your details to stand out. For this reason, many of today’s cameras don’t support this filter anymore.

There are many ways you can avoid and remove moiré patterns on your own.

To avoid moire patterns, you need to know where they appear most often. Typically, anything with lots of small details will create unusual distortions.

If you’re a portrait or lifestyle photographer, watch out for:

  • T-shirts or suits with tight patterns
  • Fabric (e.g. lace curtains)
  • Screens (laptops, TVs, and even phones).

These moire patterns can slow down your photoshoot and complicate your editing process. But this doesn’t mean you have to avoid them all the time. In some cases, you’ll need to photograph these subjects to make your photos more interesting. You might need to shoot a specific product for an advertisement. Fortunately, there are solutions to this.

What Causes Moiré in Video?

Patterns and thin lines usually cause moire in videos. The more tiny details there are, the harder it is for your camera to capture everything. These patterns create unusual curves, colours, and effects that might ruin a video

Some moiré patterns are very close to another subject. The moiré slider might desaturate or blur them. You can fix this by clicking on Erase, choosing an appropriate brush size, and brushing over the area you’d like to fix.
